Developed eastern Asian nations import a big amount of women from abroad as brides each year, although such cross?border marriages practically failed to occur twenty years ago. With a theoretical framework and empirical proof, we argue that developed Asian nations’ need for international brides could be the result of enhancement in females’s financial status and gender?discriminative household arrangements that insufficiently incorporate ladies’ improved status in wedding. We provide sets of empirical evidence in accordance with our argument, making use of different macro? and microlevel datasets. (JEL A12, J12, J61)
